Alwyn, Alvin, Vitton, Don and Brian from Malaysia booked this April slot last year. We had a few discussions beforehand to get them properly set up for the trip so that had all the right equipment to go after the Geets here in the Andaman Islands. What we did not expect was to see that these gents had absolutely the best selection of Carpenter Rods that we have seen in a long time. There were only Shimano Stella reels and a very good selection of lures, so these guys were kitted out and ready to go.

The guys had selected a good week and we were sure the fishing would be hot as the week progressed. The first day out was a bit slow due to the tides but we were lucky to get a good dogtooth on jig near the end of the day. What we saw from day one was that the guys were prepared to keep casting and that makes a huge difference. They could cast well and work the lures; they also had prior experience from fishing in Komodo and were eager to get in amongst the big Andaman GT’s that we have had the good fortune of landing more than a few of this season.

We decided to fish a combination of old and new spots as we have been fishing mainly our new spots this season. This was a good call with both Vitton and Benny getting some good fish in the in the 30-35 kilo range as well as other species apart from a lot of smaller ones.

Deep water has always been a favourite for big fish and in the conditions we had, this would be a go-to for the trip. We had discussed the plan and the guys decided to go for quality fish over quantity, but we ended up getting both.

Don got a very nice 42 kilo GT which put up a really good fight; a PB for him. He then topped it with a 49 kilo GT the next day which was again another PB. Just when we thought it could not get any better than this for him and he had even moved to casting from the back of the boat to give the others a chance, he put a clever cast into the fringing blue water over a drop off that resulted in a massive hit. We knew the fish was big, but just how big was revealed when we measured the fish to be just short of 150 cm, 55 kilos and the biggest GT for the season so far. Well don Don!!

The other guys were doing well too, putting 35 kilo plus fish on the deck. Alvin was really unlucky when the hooks pulled on an estimated over 40 kilo GT boat side, just before we could call it a capture by touching the leader.

The last day of fishing turned out to be an insane fishing day with over 50 fish boated. This is definitely not the norm and happens only a few days in a season. Every spot produced fish after fish. There are very few destinations in the world that produce this kind of fishing action and are as consistent as the Andaman Islands year after year.

Enjoy the pictures and we will be back with another trip report very soon to keep you up-to-date with all the action. Guys, well done again on a great trip and hope to see you all back here soon.

Till next time,
Tight lines.
